Actually i did change something. I installed the serial USB driver for the Kenwood TH-D72A Handheld. Let me reboot and see if it comes back to life. 90 SmartSDR for Mac; 144 SmartSDR for iOS; 150 SmartSDR CAT; 71 DAX; 279 SmartSDR API; 7.1K Radios and Accessories; 5.8K FLEX-6000 Signature Series; 559 Maestro; 14 FlexControl; 727 FLEX.
In the folder labeled 'USBCDCDriverTH-D74V100', double click the 'dpinst.exe' in the folder 'x86' with 32-bit OS, or the 'dpinst.exe' in the folder 'x64' with 64-bit OS. After a few moments, the following window is displayed. The following window is displayed, and the driver installation will begin. Featuring the SiRFstar III high-performance GPS receiver, Kenwood's TH-D72A dual-band transceiver is compatible with APRS® data communications. Offering position and weather information, the TH-D72A opens up broad new vistas of outdoor enjoyment, especially for activities like trekking. These radios use the Yaesu SCU-35 cable. It is a USB-to-serial cable with a Prolific PL2303 USB-to-serial ship. It is supported by the unmodified drivers USB in Windows and Linux. The cable uses 3.3 V voltage levels and is a two-wire cable, with GND on one wire and TxD and RxD wired together on the other wire. The virtual com port driver is a piece of software you install on your computer, to enable you to connect a USB device to a computer that lacks COM ports. A lot of older software was written for serial ports.

This Kenwood page describes how to install that software. You don't need this software if you are using an older computer with a COM port, or install a serial (COM) port on your new computer. I purchased a serial card for my Windows 7 computer that only cost $10. It works great--I got it to handle the T/R switching when running digital soundcard modes like JT65, PSK31, and RTTY.
